The enduring love affair with the guitar will be explored in the G-TARanaki Guitar Exhibition. Bringing together 60 rare, unique and famous guitars, the exhibition will showcase the best of local and national guitar collections as well as presenting the latest technology from event partners MusicWorks.
From its conception in the 1930s, the electric guitar has shaped the course of modern music. The incredible variety of sound possible from such a simple instrument has meant that it has inserted itself firmly into every genre of music imaginable.
But the guitar has done much more than that. It has spawned generations of heroes and aspirations, countless fairytales and epic fails, and pushed music in directions never before imagined. The beauty of the electric guitar is that this can happen anywhere with a power source – from the stages of New York to the bedrooms of New Plymouth.
Names like Slash, Joe Satriani, Carlos Santana and Steve Vai have all been forged around this incredible instrument, but names like Les Paul, Hoshino Gakki for ibanez,Leo Fender, Orville Gibson and David Schecter are the real heroes in this story. Their innovations with the humble guitar laid the foundations for music as we know it.
